Short stretch of Atlanta Beltline is witnessing a restaurant boom

Four new Eastside Trail-adjacent concepts open, announced in span of a few months

The Howell Mill Road corridor and other sections of West Midtown have taken lumps this year for a wave of unfortunate restaurant closures, but on the flipside of town, it’s recently been a different story. 

Within the span of a few months, high-profile patios along the Atlanta Beltline’s Eastside Trail between Irwin Street and Edgewood Avenue have sprung to life with diners and springtime revelers. And more is on the way soon. 

Each of the new eateries is operating (or will soon operate) at the base of buildings with other uses above, ranging from upscale apartments to sprawling townhomes and terrace-heavy office space. A stream of nearby foot traffic, especially on weekends and evenings, is constant. And the patio spaces, even by Atlanta’s big standards, are roomy.

Emerald City Bagels is now open on the BeltLine

Get the same gourmet bagels with an expanded iced coffee menu and an automat for speedier service

Mother-and-daughter Deanna and Jackie Halcrow started serving their New York-style bagels in East Atlanta Village in 2018, after years accumulating a following at farmers markets and pop-ups. Six years later, their long-awaited BeltLine shop is finally open.

Located in the Citizen building near Kevin Gillespie’s now-defunct Cold Beer, Emerald City is modeled after old-school delis and pharmacy counters where the staff dons white coats and paper hats. The menu of both locations is similar, but with all bagel-making taking place in East Atlanta, the BeltLine outpost was able to expand its coffee program and add an automat for faster service.

Apartment stack with retail, affordability component rechristened “Citizen”

An infill project promising to deliver “convenient connection and lavish living” directly on the Atlanta BeltLine’s popular Eastside Trail has a new name and fresh façade.

Formerly called 678 Edgewood for its address, the $37-million Studioplex project has been rechristened “Citizen” as construction enters the home stretch in Old Fourth Ward.

The 12,000-square-foot retail portion fronting the BeltLine will be called “The Shoppes at Citizen,” according to signage on site.

Now clad in black (or intensely dark gray) planking, as renderings had promised, the seven-story Columbia Ventures apartment project broke ground in fall 2021 and completed vertical construction late last summer.
