A rezoning petition for nearly 200 housing units east of Truman Parkway received a recommendation for approval from the Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission Tuesday, the latest proposal showcasing how local stakeholders seek to address Savannah’s housing shortage amid competing concerns.
Housing advocates say the project, located off Reuben Clark Drive near Memorial Health University Medical Center, is ideal for multifamily housing due to its proximity to a major employer. But a previous rezoning request was denied by Savannah City Council in 2023 because of resident concerns about increased stormwater runoff and traffic in nearby neighborhoods such as LaRoche Park, Springhill, Daffin Heights, Shirley Park and Holly Heights.
The updated proposal recommended by MPC featured numerous compromise points with residents after two years of community engagement. The developer has pledged to keep roughly 9 acres of the 14.35-acre site conserved as wetlands to help mitigate flooding while also only allowing access to the development via Reuben Clark Drive, preventing traffic from going through the adjacent neighborhood at 62nd and 63rd streets.
