In the early 1990s, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, a large Catholic parish in Denver’s Northside that’s a hub for local Latinos, faced a crisis. Nearly every day, people come to the office asking for help with medical or mental health, the pastor at the time told the parish council, and we don’t have anything to offer. Is anyone willing to take the lead on this issue? Jim Garcia, attending his first meeting of the church’s leadership group, raised his hand.

Back then, Garcia worked for Tim Wirth, a Democratic U.S. senator from Colorado. “It wasn’t like I had a health care background,” Garcia says. “But I did have an understanding of the issue from the policy level…. It turned out to be a lot more than I imagined.”

The church owned a run-down two-bedroom, 800-square-foot bungalow in the Highland neighborhood that could potentially serve as a free clinic, but bids to renovate the century-old house came in around $150,000. Garcia’s budget was $10,000. So, he stood up at a Sunday service and asked for volunteers. “More than 100 people showed up,” Garcia says. And they kept showing up, often working construction jobs by day and laboring at the clinic into the night.

The Pivotal Role Wine Shops Are Playing in Creating Atlanta’s Wine Scene

Atlanta’s restaurant scene is booming, but for those who choose where to eat according to the wine list, something is missing: wine bars

“I feel like we have no wine bars here,” says Chris McLloyd, an Atlanta sommelier known as The Hip Hop Somm. He isn’t wrong. While there are plenty of restaurants with fantastic wine lists, Atlanta lacks true wine bars. Following the closure of 8ARM and its natural wine bar on Ponce de Leon Avenue, many wine drinkers continue to search for the beating heart of Atlanta’s wine scene. And they’re finding it in wine shops across the city.

VinoTeca in Inman Park holds weekend wine tastings and offers outdoor seating, as does Press Shop in Summerhill and Vin ATL in Edgewood, which features a large outdoor patio and cozy seating arrangements inside. Kelly’s Market, a local deli across the street from Kimball House in Decatur, offers selections from its wine stash on Thursday evenings, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Elemental Spirits Co. in Poncey-Highland shows off the shop’s low-intervention wines and spirits during regular tastings.

With Emerald Trail work underway, more segments expected to go out for bid

The Emerald Trail is making significant progress in design and construction, with goals of beginning segment two construction by the end of next year, as well as starting the design of segment three.

The Trail is broken down into three phases and further down into segments, the first of which broke ground last summer and is expected to be finished by the end of March next year.

With the section of McCoy’s Creek between Kings Street and I-95 under construction, project organizer Groundwork Jacksonville is looking ahead to the second segment, located at Hogan Street, being under construction by late next summer, and another section, Hogans Creek, being designed early next year — as long as grants go through as planned.

The first part of Phase 2, the Brooklyn section of McCoy’s creek up to the river, is being designed, and the part of Phase 2 from the river up to Riverside Avenue, will be going out for bid early next year to be constructed.

In 2022, the preliminary design for the restoration of Hogans Creek was completed, which, according to Groundwork Jacksonville, was a major win.

“People have been looking to get that creek restored for a long time, and the last time anybody seriously looked into that was, I think, 2009 or 2011 when the Army Corps came in and then got out because of contamination. They didn’t want to pursue it, so I think it’s been a long time coming,” said Kay Ehas, CEO of Groundwork Jacksonville.
