The developer behind the reformation of the Union Terminal project at
the edge of downtown purchased nearby land for additional development.
Atlanta-based Columbia Ventures purchased the concrete plant next to Union
Street Terminal on April 10 through Eastside Jax Property Owner LLC for $4
million. Five days later, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, a national nonprofit
with local chapters devoted to training, educating and funding efforts to develop
low-income communities, granted the company a $4.6 million mortgage.

Lawmakers: City Emerald Trail project to receive $140 million in federal money

The city’s Emerald Trail park project will receive more than $140 million in federal dollars, U.S. Rep. Aaron Bean announced March 11.

Bean worked with fellow U.S. Rep. John Rutherford to procure the funding as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation funding initiative.

The Emerald Trail project comprises 30 miles of trails, greenways and parks to connect Downtown Jacksonville with businesses, schools and transit. The trail will connect 14 historical neighborhoods.

“It’s critical that our transportation networks have the infrastructure to keep Floridians safe while they walk, bike and drive,” Bean said in a news release.

How the Union Terminal Warehouse connects with the Eastside community

When Ryan Akin explained the qualities of the Union Terminal Warehouse once it’s renovated next year, he immediately caught the attention of Eastside advocates.

It will devote a majority of its 228 residences to workforce housing.

Akin is the development manager for Columbia Ventures, the Atlanta-based developer that is converting the former grocery warehouse into residential, commercial and retail space. As he stood in a navy suit and white hard hat on a warm, early spring morning, community advocates Suzanne Pickett and David Garfunkel shared a smile.

Those connections with the Eastside community are what may separate the Union Terminal Warehouse from others in Jacksonville.

Columbia Ventures has worked with residents, business owners and advocates on the Eastside to integrate the project into a community that needs development, but has been the recipient of previous false dawns.
